ROUNDABOUT CONFUSION

Trucks, uneven surfaces and traffic flow unpleasant for cyclists GEORGIA O’CONNORHARDING

Cyclists say the temporary roundabout in Russley is causing confusion making it potentially a dangerous route. Spokes Canterbury, a cycling advocacy group, says uneven surfaces, unfamiliar traffic flows and large trucks driving close to the traffic are making a “daunting journey “for cyclists at the Russley Rd/Memorial Ave. Last month the New Zealand Transport Agency put in a temporary “rugby ball shaped roundabout at the intersection to allow for construction of an over-bridge. Spokes Canterbury chairman Don Babe (inset) said scarce attention is being given to cyclists out at the roundabout and it was one part of town they were not proud of. “What is daunting out there is big trucks and how close they get to cyclists, he said. Mr Babe said for tourists opting to cycle it was a ‘real shame’ the first big obstacle they would encounter from the airport was the roundabout. The roundabout is about 500m long with three traffic lanes in some areas. To improve access, traffic is

controlled by traffic lights on both the city and airport sides of Memorial Ave. But NZTA said feedback on the roundabout had been positive. So far it had received a “hand-

fulâ€? of calls about the roundabout. NZTA highway manager Colin Knaggs said the workers on site report calmer traffic and fewer horn blasts than before the switch-over.

Mr Babe said in the long run it could be good for cyclists because motorists were learning to slow down and be aware of them. “In some ways that is good for cyclists because people are actu-

ally slowing down and looking at what is coming at them.â€? Russley, Avonhead and Memorial Residents’ Association spokesman Geoff Judge said when driving he had to concentrate hard and it was not always clear where to go. Mr Knaggs said NZTA had made some small changes to ensure cyclists can see a safe way through the “Cross Nowâ€? signals. These small changes was removing shingle from the road shoulders and widening the shoulders wherever possible so the cyclists have more space on east-west Russley Rd. He said NZTA would like to encourage cyclists to use the pedestrian/cycling facilities through the island and across Memorial Ave. Mr Judge said while it was a “bit of a messâ€?, people are looking forward to having the over-bridge built as it will free up traffic.Â

Changes bring new ward for west Buck, Chen after Riccarton and Hornby wards GEORGIA O’CONNORHARDING

Changes to local government boundaries mean the west will be divided into three wards. This means that the former Riccarton-Wigram Community Board will be now called the HalswellHornby-Riccarton Community Board. A city councillor will be voted for from each ward instead of the ward at large. The changes, released recently by the Local Government Commission means a different way of tackling where city councillors and community board members will be elected from. There will also be 16 city councillors instead of the current 13. Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck said she is going for the Riccarton ward, while city councillor Jimmy Chen the Hornby ward. Community board chairman Mike Mora said he would go for re-election to the community board in the Hornby area.

Following your passion to Flame files the highest degree pays off Working with St John to prevent loss of life P OA

Canterbury University Pro-ViceChancellor of the College of Arts Dr Jonathan LeCocq, writes that following your dreams pays off for arts students: Students are returning to study Arts at Canterbury University in record numbers for the first time since the Christchurch earthquakes. With a 12 per cent increase from last year, it’s great to see school leavers and other new students regaining the confidence to follow their passions; whether it’s history, literature, media, politics or music. And they can do so knowing that this is a sound choice for their future earnings and careers. Research released earlier this year by Universities New Zealand, the body responsible for the quality of university programmes and which represents New Zealand universities nationally and internationally, showed that a typical university graduate will earn around $1.6 million more

S BOX

over their working life than a non-graduate. This is highest for a medical doctor $4 million, a professional engineer $3 million or an information technology graduate $2 million, but is still high for arts graduates with an average earnings premium of around $1 million to $1.3 million- depending on subject. Almost all of them – 90 per cent in fact are in jobs that call on their degree-level skills, such as teaching, management, policy and planning roles. The same research showed that unemployment rates three years after graduation are lower for arts graduates-typically around 2-3 per cent unemployment. This is compared to plumbers or carpenters with an 8 per cent unemployment on average. And even when you account for years

of lost earnings while studying and repayment of student loans, arts graduates typically have lifetime earnings double that of those with a trade qualification. After the earthquakes there was a sense that practical careers in trade and construction were more stable. Now students are starting to realise they can study what they love while preparing for rewarding careers. This is no accident. Employers tell us that in the constantly changing workplace versatility counts, with personal and general skills high on their list. And since the earthquakes we have developed new programmes in areas such as digital technologies that prepare our students for employment alongside their traditional majors like history, English, political science and many more. Along with a thriving internship/work-integrated learning programme, which lets our students link their studies directly to real-world experience, our graduates learn how to turn their passion for learning into a successful career, an enriched life, and making a real difference in their communities.

MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER

There’s been a bit of media interest recently in the fact the Fire Service is co-responding with ambulance to Code Purple calls. That is those where life is imminently in danger. These calls now play a significant part in firefighters’ working lives. Combine them with the attendance of both services at motor accidents and we are becoming pretty familiar with each other. This week, by way of example, included 16 Code Purple calls and 17 motor vehicle crashes. That’s 33 calls out of the 113 attended. One of these at Little River last Saturday evening involved a choking incident. The poor fellow could breathe but could not dislodge the blockage. The local fire crew attended and tried to keep him calm until the ambulance arrived.

He, however, convulsed into vomiting, dislodging a sausage. The problem was solved leaving not too much for the ambos to do. Our guys assisted by washing the evidence away with a fire hose. What do you do when the expensive drone you’ve been flying at Ferrier Park, in Avonhead, manages to catch itself in the top branches of a high tree? This happened late Monday afternoon and I suspect the pilot had that sinking feeling that his expensive ‘toy’ was a goner. Someone called the Fire Service and by extending one of our ladders to its fullest and sending a firefighter up with a high pressure hose reel set on jet the Sockburn boys managed to dislodge the drone, thus making one operator a much happier person.

‘Nor-west’ runway use disturbs residents

each night on whether the assembled staff and machines begin work or stand down, she said. Mr Judge said the communication from the airport had not been good enough. “Rather than having people ring and complain and have curfews they have went ahead and done it.” The airport said they discussed the works with the community groups and put a notice in local papers. UPGRADE: The main runway at Christchurch Airport is being upgraded during the night, more flights are landing and taking off on the east-west runway.

GEORGIA O’CONNORHARDING

Residents near Christchurch Airport have been kept up at all hours of the night because of runway upgrades. For the past three months, upgrades are taking place on the north-south runway meaning aircraft land or take-off using the east-west runway, flying over the top of Avonhead. The runway is often referred to locally as the “nor-west”. Russley, Avonhead and Memorial Residents’ Association spokesman Geoff Judge said the noise was causing sleepless nights. A Christchurch Airport spokeswoman said there had been a lot of inquiries from residents living nearby. “Most inquirers have been understanding. Some have not because they are feeling sleep deprived. We understand and can only apologise,” she said. The work is likely to finish at the end of the month, she said.

Leukemia battler’s roses help support home Lucy Falconer is not only a leukemia battler, but now she is the inspiration behind a fundraiser for Ranui House that supports families whose loved ones are going through medical treatment. The eight-year-old had a rose named after her – “Lucy’s Rose” – which has been sold to help raise funds for the place she stayed in while receiving treatment. Yesterday, a cheque for $8194 was presented to Ranui House from the sales of her rose. The rose campaign started when Lucy’s grandmother Jane Falconer decided she wanted to work with her local Lions Club to raise money for Ranui House where the family stayed while Lucy underwent treatment. Tasman Bay Roses based in Motueka, trialled the rose for two years before they declared it met all requirements to grow well before sourcing the rights to name the flower Lucy’s Rose. Per potted rose it sells for $32 by local Lions Clubs around the South Island, with $12.8 going

Spinal injury research wants volunteers

A Canterbury University researcher wants to give people with spinal cord injuries the chance to improve their balance and ease of movement. UC PhD student Cindy Allison is seeking participants with spinal cord injuries for the final phase of her doctoral research. She has drawn on the work of Israeli physicist Dr Moshe Feldenkrais to develop a new group programme for disabled people that should be accessible and affordable. In the final phase of research Ms Allison will measure the effect that the lessons have on ease and range of movement, pain, spasticity and fatigue. Potential participants would be adults with an SCI. They will need to have had their injury for at least 12 months, be able to get on and off the floor, and be able to communicate effectively and understand English instructions. To take part or to find out more, phone 366 7001 ext. 8397 or email lucinda. allison@pg.canterbury.ac.nz

Charlotte Benfield

Wishes, dress making and conjuring Head faerie Lily Peas-Blossom also known as Charlotte Benfield leads a busy life bringing joy to the community as a fuchsia-coloured faerie as well as juggling her international dress-making business. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding about wishes, dating a wizard and her major project she has waiting in the wings. Hi Lily Peas-Blossom, I would like to know what made you decide to become a faerie? It happened about two years ago. My partner Ari is the deputy wizard. The Wizards said anyone who would like to, could come out as a magical ally with them and dress up. My friend Ruby and her partner, Wizard Nick both decided we would go out as faeries. We both had such a good time we thought we might start a group of faeries and then it from there. Do you have the qualities that people generally imagine when they think of faeries? We do have some magic. We have our faerie wishes we give out and I try to keep track of how many come true and currently they are running at about a 80 per cent success rate. We are also interested in philosophy of why faerie wishes would

work. So when we give a faerie wish we like people to picture in their mind what they would like to come true, so it is like saying to your subconscious brain this is what you would like to happen. And it means that you are more likely to work towards that goal coming true. Sometimes it is crazy things that come true and that is amazing. Do you have any examples you could share with me? One wish was a person who won Lotto and they won $25. Another wished they would get an apartment quickly and they got one and someone wished they would get a job and as they stepped away from having their faerie wish they got a job. And what made you decide to call yourself Lily Peas-Blossom? Stargazer lillies are my favourite flower and I also love sweet

peas. But sweet peas are something that is actually a relatively new hybrid. And before that they had pea blossoms which were the flowers of the peas which were used for decoration. It wasn’t until about the 18th century that they invented the sweet pea. That’s why in Shakespeare there is a faerie called PeasBlossom. Take it you are a fan of Shakespeare? I am interested in his ideas. I am not a huge fan though. My favourite faerie book is actually called Blackbringer by Laini Taylor. And it is

fundraisers and bring a bit of magic. Is there any sort of rite of passage to become a part of the faerie group? Yes, if you want to become a faerie you have to get in contact with us and come to our events. Once you decide to go ahead with it you become a faerie friend for about six months. If you get along well with the faerie group you become a faerie later on. Once you are a full faerie you get magic and wishes. You get your faerie dust container which you to put your faerie dust into. You also get wings and faerie dresses. And your clothing is traditional to your group? Yes, we are quite unique in clothing because most faerie groups aren’t quite so bright. When you become a faerie you get a colour and that is what you wear. So I am the fuchsia faerie. Great colour. I am interested in what you were like growing up – were you always so creative? I was a very alternative teenager and I always had brightly coloured hair. I wore tutus and I love faeries. I went to Hagley Community College.

App to track delivery process worldwide A rising developer from Wigram has created an app allowing customers at global provider Aramex to track their deliveries from all over the world. Customers can now rate and manage their entire Aramex delivery experience through the use of a phone. The new app allows people to follow their delivery online, monitor shipment progress, manage their account, addresses and delivery details. The idea was formed after Christchurch LWA Solutions chief executive Atta Elayyan (right) spent a week driving around the streets of Amman, Jordan, to find out what technology couriers needed. “To better understand the problem space we spent a few days as Aramex courier drivers. observing their daily routine gave us immense insight into the task at hand.” He said before embarking on the project, his design team had little knowledge on what a courier driver’s daily routine was or what their task management software should look like. “We found their tasks relied heavily on the speed and efficiency of the infrared scanner hardware.” He said drivers would com-

monly park up, scan a package, pull up customer details, manually input customer phone number into mobile, call customer and ask for directions. From there he went on to pitch his idea to a major multi-billion Dubai-based company. With 13,900 employees at 354 locations across 60 countries, Aramex is the largest logistics and transport services company in the Middle East. Mr Elayyan said after winning the pitch to re-invent Aramex’s Windows mobile e-courier solution they had to replace the expensive devises in a field with a smart-phone based app. “The huge win for Aramex is

they don’t even need to supply their couriers with hardware anymore, they bring their own device,” Mr Elayyan said. The app was announced last week by Aramex chief executive Hussein Hachem at the company’s annual conference in Dubai. The impact of this solution will soon be felt in New Zealand and Australia as Aramex begins rolling out their apps to Fastway. Mr Elayyan’s Christchurch company has been nominated for the New Zealand Windows app developer of the year for Microsoft New Zealand’s annual awards.

Apprentice builder wins carpentry challenge A builder has won a building apprenticeship challenge beating out other apprentices from around the city. Kerry Manson, 41, competed in the Certified Builders Carpentry Apprentice Challenge held last weekend at Ara Institute of Canterbury. Mr Manson is in his final year of his apprenticeship with Reynolds Construction, based in Prebbleton. The competition involved apprentices building children’s playhouses to set specifications and safety standards, within a set time frame while showing technical skills. They are designed for children of preschool age, built low to the ground and measuring about 1.8m in height. The apprentice builders were tasked with building them from durable, long-lasting

trade-quality construction timber and materials, and built with pre-schoolers in mind, which meant no sharp edges and nails punched flush below the surface. The playhouses were donated in their natural timber state so that early childcare providers can use them as is or paint them as they choose to add their own personal touch. The apprentice challenge is run by Certified Builders and its Industry Training Association Building, in conjunction with Ara Institute of Canterbury. This was one of 12 events being held across the country over March and April, with the winners of each region going through to the Certified Builders Carpentry Apprentice Challenge final to be held in May.

Knowing Your Rights

Problems paying back a loan? Ari came into us because he was behind in his car payments and wanted to know what he could do. He bought the car two years ago to get to work in and had been making his payments on time. But a couple of months ago he had been made redundant, was now only working part time, and was struggling to make his payments. The first thing we checked out with Ari is whether he had any insurance which might cover a loss of income, such as payment protection insurance. Sometimes this is included as part of your credit agreement, but in Ari’s case he didn’t have any. If you are having problems with repaying a credit contract because of an unforeseen change in your circumstances (e.g. a job loss, illness), you can apply to the lender under a “hardship provision”. It is a legal requirement for lenders to consider applications for hardship provisions. If you can come to such an arrangement with your lender, this may mean that you can pay off the debt in smaller amounts, or take a ‘repayment holiday’ until you are able to afford the full payments again. In order to apply for

the hardship provision you should contact the lender as soon as you realise you will not be able to pay - you can’t apply under this provision if you are more than two months behind in your payments. Even if you aren’t eligible under the special hardship provisions most creditors will be willing to discuss ways to help make sure that you are able to meet your obligations, as long as you approach them early on to let them know you are having trouble making the payments and what you are trying to do to fix it (such as a budget plan). It is important to realise that if you reach an agreement with your creditor such as a repayment holiday or smaller repayments for a while, you will probably end up paying more in the long term for the loan because interest will normally still accrue in the meantime. In Ari’s case he was able to negotiate with his lenders to make interest-only payments for six months while he looked for fulltime work. To talk to one of our trained team members about financial problems or to volunteer for Citizens Advice Bureau call us on 0800 367 222.

Dilo oil

– The remarkable skin rejuvenator

U

ntil Rachel Hunter’s popular TV series Tour of Beauty, Dilo Oil was relatively unknown, being one of the best-kept secrets of the Pacific Islands. It may, however, be the number one natural beauty oil available as it possesses powerful natural skin regeneration, anti-ageing and healing properties. According to ethnobotanist Chris Kilham, Dilo (pronounced dee-low) Oil is a powerful skin regenerator as it is one of the most effective agents in promoting the regeneration and formation of new tissue, thereby accelerating wound healing and the growth of healthy skin. Dilo Oil is super absorbing and nourishing, and can penetrate all three layers of the skin, offering exceptional cell hydration and regeneration. As well as this, Dilo Oil has potent antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant properties. Traditionally, Dilo Oil is used to keep the skin young and youthful and for just about any skin complaint. Wondering what to buy Mum when a box of chocolates or hand cream won’t do another year round?

clever Lower Hutt woman has given me a new idea. When many of our mothers are feeling the ache of ageing limbs, or suffer with chronic pain or circulatory problems, Jenny Watson’s Aircycle is a perfect self-help answer. It’s totally transportable, folding to fit your pocket, simple in concept, easy to use and acclaimed by a growing number of users in its efficacy, and it can be easily posted in an envelope if Mum lives a distance away. For painful hands, feet or legs, this small therapeutic device is used when sitting, most effective when used in several short spells a day – no need for long, tough workouts. Jenny says, “Many delighted people report that it helps relieve arthritic pain and other problems, such as cramp and ankle swelling. We know that regular use while sitting watching TV can begin the progress of stronger legs, better balance, comfortable walking and freedom from discomfort. It’s an easy way to manage a range of health conditions – it offers relief. Any of us can use the Aircycle almost anywhere. Jenny showed me some of the many grateful letters she’d received. Often, Aircycle users have spent heavily on medications and therapy before discovering this simple and effective, drug-free device. Jenny says, “News is fast spreading by word of mouth, but we still have a way to go.”

or decades, scientists believed brain damage with age, after a stroke or injury, was irreversible and brain neurons could not be repaired. In more recent times, new research has shown that neurons can grow back with the right conditions and that a special extract of ginkgo biloba (EGb-761 or Tebonin) has been clinically found to assist in this. The implications for stroke recovery are obvious, but researchers also know many of us suffer from undetected “micro-strokes” that over a period of time slowly reduce our cognitive function. Tebonin is prescribed worldwide as a natural supportive agent for a healthy brain and cognitive function. It supports healthy mental performance, concentration, focus, alertness, motor function and to help with many conditions, including tinnitus (ringing and noise in the ears), vertigo and normal balance. Tebonin improves microcirculation and helps the blood flow reach those critical places it needs to get to. It is a potent anti-oxidant and makes the red blood cells more pliable and capillary walls more flexible. Tebonin is one of the most widely studied and researched herbal products in the world and is the only ginkgo biloba extract manufactured via a patented multi-step extraction process. Each small tablet contains a highly concentrated 50:1 extract to give you

a therapeutic, clinical dose without having to take a large amount of the herb. Of 25 ginkgo biloba products on the market, and tested by a major medical journal, only Tebonin passed all five of the test requirements. Ten brands didn’t meet any requirements and the rest didn’t pass more than three out of five requirements. Tebonin is the only ginkgo biloba extract shown to activate all areas of the brain and is considered the gold standard in ginkgo. Tebonin has been trusted by millions of consumers worldwide for over 30 years, with more than 8,000,000 tablets consumed each day. Tebonin and further information is available from the natural health advisers at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy in New Brighton. Phone 388 5757, we are always happy to help!

Horticulture Training for Ensuring a safe work place Christchurch Residents Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community.

I

f you would like to enjoy gardening, improve your property value, produce fresh vegetables and fruit or get a job within the horticulture industry, this flexible programme can help you gain the necessary skills. Skills Update Training Institute has partnered with CPIT Aoraki to offer an introductory ‘no fees’ horticulture blended learning course which combines both classrooms and online learning methods. Tutorials have been scheduled weekly during evenings including the occasional weekend field trips to suit those currently working full time or part time. Our experienced tutors, Ryan Young or Hamish Kelland, are also available by phone and

e-mail outside of classroom hours. Ryan, the winner of various horticultural awards and titles, says “as your learning facilitator, I will assist you throughout the duration of the programme and provide guidance for each assessment.” “I am passionate about sustainable horticulture and really enjoy working with students to achieve their study and educational goals” says Hamish, who has a wide range of experience across the industry as well as teaching in the tertiary sector. Enrolments are now open for 2016. Call or email our team today. Study over 40 weeks and earn the sought after National Certificate in Horticulture Level 3.

W

e all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? Not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. It is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. Take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPR. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries, hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. New Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in Australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles

accidents or falls in the home. Fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. If you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. romoting imagination, creativity, academic acumen and hands-on learning skills from kindergarten through to Year 13 is how the unique soul and spirit of each child is recognised. If your ideal school is child-focused, computer-free until high school, honours a gentle but effective learning curve that is driven by a child’s natural development rather than National Standards driven, then the Steiner School is definitely worth a visit. We foster creativity and bring fun into learning in a highly structured way. Steiner education prizes the arts, creativity and imagination as multiple pathways to high levels of innovative thinking and efficient skill acquisition. Nurturing a child’s inquisitive mind is a key towards success, reflected in our excellent academic outcomes at primary and NCEA levels. Steiner Schools do National Standards only at Year 8, following Ministry-approved learning progressions from Years 2 to 8. This way we are able to allow all students to progress successfully and build up healthy self-esteem. Steiner education is equally rich with stories, plays, culture, literature, sports, art, maths, music and science,

paving the way for a sharp intellect, a deep and emotional life, a love for humanity and an intrinsic motivation for learning.

Cashmere High School – building on success

L

earning is part of life. Learning allows us to grow, achieve and create our sense of personal identity and purpose. Cashmere seeks to help each student achieve their potential and find their future pathways. As a school community, we enjoy celebrating the success of our individuals. Personal achievement does not happen in isolation – it requires natural talent, support, guidance and nurturing by family, friends, teachers, coaches and mentors. Cashmere’s NCEA qualification results for 2015 were the best ever, and are consistently above all national benchmarks and comparisons. Our school’s recent successes are impressive. We consistently produce sporting superstars as regional and national champions, such as Youth Olympic Fencer Sheldon Ogilvie, World Cup Rhythmic Gymnast Maggie Takami and double winning NZ Road Race runner Cameron Avery. On the sports fields our Senior Girls’ Netball team was the top achieving South Island school at the NZ Secondary School Championships, and our Football teams are consistent regional and national performers in both the full 11-a-side and indoor Futsal competitions. The diversity of our school sports opportunities is a key strength. Cashmere has a strong national reputation in the performing arts, with a wide range of musical groups from full orchestra and choirs to rock bands and barbershop chorus. Cashmere students are regular high achievers at the annual regional competitions, such as

Rockquest. Cashmere is currently the South Island champions in both Junior and Senior Theatresports, regional winners of the 2015 Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Competition, strong performers in Debating and Stage Challenge and also produce outstanding major school productions. Our school vision is to produce students of great character, and this is best illustrated with the community work our student leaders co-ordinate. This has included raising funds for causes such as the NZ Blood and Leukaemia Foundation to international crises such as the earthquake appeal for Nepal and Cyclone relief in the Pacific. Our emphasis is on helping our young people develop a sense of community, belonging, service and thinking beyond oneself. Cashmere High School is a community coeducational school that is very proud of its students. Proud of their active participation, positive contributions and personal and collective achievements. This is all a result of fostering a safe, supportive and encouraging community of opportunities and learning. Parents and prospective students are welcome to attend our annual Open Day on Tuesday, May 24, from 4pm until 6.30pm. This is a great opportunity to see our school and the wonderful people that make it a great place to be in.

State-of-the-art schools for Christchurch’s east

A

performing arts centre, sports facilities, custom-made music spaces, a cutting-edge library and technology suites are just some of the facilities that will be built for the new Avonside Girls’ and Shirley Boys’ High Schools at Queen Elizabeth Park. The new schools will open alongside each other in January 2019. Students who join the schools from next year will complete their senior years and NCEA at the new site. The new campus will cost at least $80 million and be built near the Eastern Sport and Recreation Centre that will have swimming pools, water and fitness facilities. This will be the first time two single sex schools have co-located in New Zealand. The schools’ principals, Avonside’s Sue Hume and Shirley’s John Laurenson, are looking forward to the move. “There may be one campus but there will be two separate schools each with its own culture, curriculum and uniform,” says John Laurenson. It’s about offering the best of the single sex and co-educational worlds, says Sue Hume. “Students will spend most of their day in a single sex environment, but there will be times where they can interact with students from the other school. For example, we’ll have a library, café and an extensive bus network that students from both schools will use. This enables valuable social

development,” says Sue Hume. Both schools pride themselves on offering high quality, single sex education. “Avonside girls thrive in our supportive environment. Our curriculum, cultural and leadership opportunities are designed to engage females and meet their needs,” says Sue Hume. “Girls also participate more in the single sex environment, particularly when it comes to sport. They have the freedom to just be themselves.” Research shows boys achieve higher academically in single sex schools. Analysis by the New Zealand Council for Educational Research in 2012 showed that 42 per cent of those leaving state boys’ schools attained University Entrance, compared with 23 per cent of male students leaving co-educational schools. “There are other benefits, too. Shirley has a strong culture around being better than before. It’s also a place where lifelong bonds are formed, normally over victories and losses on the sports field and in the classroom, with the boys supporting each other to do better,” says John Laurenson. Sue Hume says the new campus will be a place the community can be proud of. “Our facilities will be available for community use. The site is beautiful with mature trees and close proximity to Travis Wetland. It also has a deep cultural significance for Ngai Tahu. This will be an excellent asset for Christchuch’s east.”

OPEN EVENING Tuesday 31 May 2016 from 5.00pm – 7.00pm

The evening begins in the gymnasium at 5.00pm, with an address from the Principal, Mrs Sue Hume, and student representatives. A tour of the school follows, with the opportunity to talk to teachers and students. We look forward to welcoming all prospective students and families for 2017.

Linwood College

Mairehau High School -

A letter from the principAl

relish the opportunities

I

t is with great pleasure that I have taken on the principal’s position at Linwood College. I have great aspirations for the college. My initial goal is to build strong relationships with the students and community, and this begins at Open Night. At Linwood College, we believe in a strengths-based, ‘pathwayed’ curriculum. This means the teachers, students and families knowing what the students’ existing learning and skills are as they come to Linwood College from our partner primary schools. In this way, these existing capabilities can be built upon

both in themselves and in any area that may need developing. It starts with the students’ strengths. The pathwayed curriculum also connects the school learning to what the students want to do when they leave school. “What are my post-school pathways – tertiary study or employment – and how does my Linwood College learning help me achieve these pathways?” Therefore, education at Linwood College is about seeing the whole person – classroom learning, sport, music, drama – and how these developmentally positive experiences enrich students’ understanding of who they are and broaden their outlook. These experiences nurture students’ classroom focus by contextualising their learning and sowing the seeds of positive ambition. In this way, learning is meaningful to the individual and strengths-based. Connected to this is the total rebuilding of Linwood College. These are exciting times as collectively, the community focuses on the buildings and spaces that best support the styles of teaching and learning that students are most likely to succeed in. Of course, it is true that buildings alone do not necessarily improve education – the relationship with the teacher and the personalisation of learning are the two key factors for this – but there is also no doubt that new, purpose-built buildings and spaces can contribute hugely to these two factors.

T

he Year 9 cohort of 2016 have settled easily into life at Mairehau High School. In fact, they are relishing the opportunities that come their way, including an exciting learning opportunity called ‘Flexible Learning Time’. For 3 hours a week our students plan, implement and reflect on their own learning adventure. Students are invited to choose what they learn about and how. Some inspiring, fascinating and creative projects have come to fruition in Term 1. These include a project planning and fundraising for a trip to Ryde Falls at Mt Oxford, a project requiring an in-depth and challenging interview with a police officer around the law (for an aspiring lawyer) and a project involving healthy debate and extensive research around Keytruda (a cancer curing drug). We are eagerly awaiting kicking off our Term 2 projects and seeing where they take us!

The Year 9 cohort have also participated in a day sailing at Lake Rua. The purpose of this trip was to really bond as a year group. The students made the most of the opportunity to learn a new skill - and they were amazing The next adventure on our calendar is Year 9 Camp. We are off to the beautiful Glentui area to try some adventure based learning. Around school, it has been wonderful to see the Year 9s participating in and thoroughly enjoying music lessons, our production and our sports programmes.

Middleton Grange School encourage purpose of education

M

iddleton Grange School, like other schools in Christchurch, has a heart for pupils, a desire to see its school community engaged in learning. However, what makes Middleton Grange different to other schools is what it sees as the purpose of education, namely ‘for the glory of God’. At Middleton Grange we talk about character, excellence, service for the glory of God. With that ultimate purpose in mind, we work with our pupils for them to grow in character, encouraging them to be young men and women of integrity and compassion with a hope for the future. We expect from all our pupils a commitment to excellence in every aspect of their education – academically, sporting and culturally, and we inspire them to fully use their Godgiven talents. Finally, we support our pupils so that they are prepared to serve; not only equipped to serve, but willing to serve. We work hard to ensure our pupils have an outward focus – looking to the needs of others. While it is fair to say that more schools would

seek character, excellence and service for pupils, for Middleton Grange pupils it is done not for ourselves but for others and for God’s glory. The school provides many opportunities for pupils to develop in these three areas, such as missions trips, peer support, leadership roles, kapa haka, Year 1 and Year 13 Teddy Bear Picnic events to name a few. – a hidden gem

H

illmorton High School was recently described as a “hidden gem”, and we invite you to come and see what this means. We offer education in a Year 7 to 13 environment, with most students joining us either in Year 7 or Year 9. A parent recently said the following about Hillmorton: “My children are doing really well at Hillmorton… Hillmorton helps prepare kids academically but also helps to develop them socially and prepares them well to live in a multicultural world with understanding, empathy and unity.”

Our mission is, “Creating better futures”; while our motto is, “Personal best, nothing less”. A former student said, “As a student at Hillmorton High School you feel a part of one big family. You are never judged nor put down, but encouraged to be the best you possibly can be. Due to the small size, the opportunities are endless for leadership and sporting success. Hillmorton isn’t just a school, it’s a lifestyle.” If you are looking for a small school where students feel safe and welcome, where they are encouraged and helped to achieve their best academically and where “service” leadership is expected, then Hillmorton could be your school, your “lifestyle”.

Papanui High School

FOCUS AT MARIAN

– preparing students for their future

“Our aim is simple... To provide the best education possible for every student.”

At Marian College, our dedication is to partner highquality teaching practices with well-resourced e-learning opportunities in all areas of the curriculum.

W

i-Fi is available throughout our school. Students are encouraged to bring their own devices to connect to the school platform for daily use in classes and for assignments. Marian College is a Google school. Google Applications for Education are used in classrooms as learning tools. Teachers and students also use Google Docs for sharing information. Digital technologies is undertaken by all students in Year 9, and offered as an optional subject for students in years 10 to 13. Students have access to four dedicated computer suites as well as an extensive range of Chromebooks, iPads and tablets for their learning. A state-ofthe-art distance learning room, that enables students to undertake study in a diverse range of NCEA level subjects via video conferencing, is well used at the school and supported by the e-dean. Marian’s fundamental commitment to e-learning results in students who are both

W innovative and responsive in the digital age, and who use e-learning as an integral part of their studies. We believe strongly in the importance of continually enhancing our use of e-learning strategies and resources to ensure our students are constantly operating at the leading edge of educational technology. To facilitate this outcome, the teaching staff have committed to ongoing professional development in e-learning.

Marian’s fundamental commitment to e-learning results in students who are both innovative and responsive in the digital age, and who use e-learning as an integral part of their studies.

e are making a difference for our students, and they are doing incredibly well. The school has worked hard to consolidate recent initiatives to ensure sustained and continuous improvement. Giving students the opportunity to study from an innovative and broad curriculum is critical to providing each student a pathway that meets their individual needs. We allow for a greater range and flexibility in subject choice, including the utilisation of the secondary/tertiary interface. This reinforces the philosophy underpinning personalised learning and is strongly supported by understanding our students’ interests, passions, talents and ultimately, their career aspirations. All that we do here is reinforced by positive relationships, an ethos of caring, cultural responsiveness, inclusion and high expectations – what we call, “Our full service model”. The school highly values the connectedness of curricular and co-curricular learning. We have a philosophical understanding that the holistic development of the student is critical to their individual success. We understand that for effective learning to take place, it has to be

implemented in such a way that students will be highly engaged. The school does this in a ‘forward thinking’ way by creating learning environments that allow our students to see value in what they do and achieve. Papanui “pride” is what we represent, and we demonstrate this by having young adults leave our school as confident learners who have gained the appropriate qualifications and social skills to become valued, contributing members of society. You are invited to view our website, school charter, ERO report and/or contact the school for more information. We look forward to welcoming all prospective students and their families/ whanau to visit our school.

Our aim is simple….to provide the best education possible for every student”

Selwyn House School

elwyn House School is well-known for its iconic brown uniform and cute cloche hats. The traditional appearance of our students, however, is at odds with the ground-breaking innovative education received by every girl. Whether you are a Year 1 or Year 8 student – robotics, Spanish, performing arts and makerspace form part of your basic curriculum. On a daily basis, our girls are challenged and extended by subjects and opportunities which most students do not have access to until their secondary years. This is evident in the exceptional success of our girls. In 2015, Selwyn House students won national awards and competitions in robotics, future problem solving and Jump Jam. They also won regional spelling competitions and filled three out of 11 compere spots at the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival. If you are the parent of a primary-aged girl, you will not just provide her with a better education. Selwyn House is the only dedicated primary girls’ school in Christchurch. We only educate Year 1 to 8 girls, and we are the experts in this area. With a future-focused curriculum (including STEM subjects - science, technology, engineering and mathematics), we prepare girls to take their place in the world. We understand our students will take up occupations which do not yet exist, so they leave us as self-directed ‘inquiry’ learners who take risks, can problem solve and think independently. Whether you enrol for Year 1, or opt for a later entry to prepare for high school, Selwyn House School is the best decision you will ever make for your daughter.

e have a strong middle school identity led by progressive a staff who understand boys’ needs and deliver an education for young men. This includes a high percentage of male staff, senior male student role models and the Rite Journey programme at Year 10 for all boys and their parents, supporting a transition from boyhood to manhood. The school is a leader in delivering a 21st century curriculum in modern learning environments, underpinned by an exemplary five-year ERO review (2015) and highly competitive NCEA results compared to boys’ achievement at national and local levels. We are also one of the few Microsoft global-lead schools in NZ, with a whole staff committed to innovative and engaging teaching and learning for the future. The school has a diverse community with a significant Maori and Pasifika community and a growing Filipino base. We are leaders

About 94 per cent of our boys are engaged in sports, with 75 per cent of our staff coaching. We compete across a very wide range of sports to elite level in rugby, touch, league, basketball, rowing, football, volleyball and cricket with significant success. We have been the national school leader in Young Enterprise business competitions for over a decade and were acknowledged for excellence in engagement, with one of five national Prime Minister’s Excellence in Education Awards in 2014. We have had a restorative culture to manage relationship conflicts for over eight years and aim to provide our young men with a settled, happy and positive environment in which to thrive and achieve. This affirms our key values around social justice, inclusion, liberating education and spirituality.

DENTURE SOUTH Where technology meets art

T

he well-established denture clinic in Barrington, Denture South, has been owned and operated by dental technician Andrew Johnson since 2002, and since then he and his team have built up a reputation in the community for professional, friendly and caring service. Three years ago a second Denture South was established in Hornby to service the western suburbs, originally as a temporary clinic. However, a few months later, as Andrew realised people in that area found it more convenient than travelling to

Barrington, it became a permanent clinic with the opening days extended from three to five. Now, there has been another change, with Andrew selling the Hornby clinic to experienced dental technician Chris Castle, who has been working with him for three years. Following the transition stage, the changeover will become official in early July, with a new name over the door – Better Denture. However, as both Andrew and Chris emphasise, everything else will remain exactly the same at both clinics.

“The same service, same prices and people still taken care of right through the process, with after care provided as needed,” Chris says. The smooth, trouble-free service provided at the two clinics means patients are assisted in the transition through the initial stages of having their new dentures, are followed up a week after the fitting, and have ongoing care over the next six months. “That follow-through is very important,” Andrew says. In addition to providing dentures and partial plates, Denture South has a full selection of adults’ and children’s

mouthguards priced at $85 for all sizes. These are available in a huge range of colours to match sports team colours and are essential to protect the teeth through the rough and tumble of winter sports. The Denture South location is Barrington Street, Spreydon and Better Denture is in Brynley St, Hornby. Both clinics have off-street parking.

environment in which to live and work. in case of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. if exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. Even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. in summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, however as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline. it is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation.
